On Tuesday morning I woke up in Chiang Mai and in a random act of spontaneity, I went to the airport, bought a ticket, and flew to Bangkok. Unbeknownst to me, there was a revolution in the works. A few hours later, I was in a bar, drinking a red bull and vodka when all of a sudden, the lights came on and an English announcement came over a loud speaker urging us to all return to our hotels and remain in our rooms, as the police had imposed a curfew. Of course, we were all pretty confused, and that is when it all started happening. Standing there amidst the confusion, one person ran through the bar screaming, "The Communists are Coming, The Communists are Coming!" I though to myself, oh sh-t the Chinese are taking over Thailand.

But, as most of you know, such was not the case. The coup occurred on Tuesday evening here in Thailand. I was about one mile from the center of where it all happened. On Wednesday I had a chance to see what was going on and this is what I saw: women giving soldiers yellow flowers, children climbing on tanks for photo opps, and men brining KFC to soldiers in thanks...It almost seemed as if their presence had become an attraction.

I have since returned home safely to Chiang Mai. I am told that 81% of the Thai population agrees with the coup and thus it should remain a non-violent matter. I am following the news carefully, I am in contact with the American Embassy, and AJWS is monitoring the situation as well. If there becomes an immediate need to leave, I have emergency evacuation insurance through AJWS to get me out of the country safely. I am remaining vigilant and most of all, I still feel safe. Thank you all for your expressed concerns and notes.
