Today was travel day. The trip was virtually incident free - thanks to the TomTom navigator, We left Las Vegas at 09:30 and arrived at the hotel at 20:30 - with 2 short stops. The roads were fairly clear until we reached San Francisco. The view changed as we travelled, starting with mountainous views followed by fairly flat terrain with miles of vines. First impressions of the hotel was very disappointing - close to a main route and a small 'rustic' room. Went for a meal locally - there are loads of excellent varied restaurants within 5 minutes - made up for the disappointment of the room.

Got very little sleep - room too noisy
. Managed to get moved to a bigger, lighter room that was further from the road so was quieter. Good free breakfast! 'Frisco is an amazing place, the hills are so steep and travelling them on cable car or trolley buses is like a slow roller coaster. We went to the Maritime Park part of Fisherman's Wharf - this to get a 3 day pass for buses, trolleys and trams! Also got to Union Square and visited the Cheesecake Factory in Macys (their Cheesecakes are HUGE - must be 6" tall; some more like 12"). Met a lady who is staying in 'Frisco for a year (husband a Cancer doctor) - she loves the place particularly the weather...... Talking of weather - unseasonably warm - about 25 - 30 degrees Celsius - and a very dry heat (straight from Las Vegas). The locals are so quirky, probably the genuine version of the American Icon, but when they wish you to 'Have a Nice day' they genuinely seem to mean it - the very first bus that we got on I was somewhat concerned as to whether it was the right one and was most 'business-like' to the driver - he was having none of it until we said 'good morning' to each other and checked that we were feeling well - then we could get to the business of buying a ticket..... Early night to catch up on some sleep.......

Great day today
! The weather was perfect - mid 20s Celsius perfect blue sky - it gets chilly in the evening now. Spent a lot of the day at Pier 39, an excellent set of shops. Lovely ice cream. I reckon more than 300 seals were 'in residence' (they started to collect there since the earthquake of 1990). Fun shops included; a shop dedicated purely to fridge magnets, another purely to sweets (mostly flavoured 'taffys' - I think these are toffees). A Spy shop, another themed to be in a jungle with a volcano erupting - just such fun. Rode the F line tram - mostly made up of old Italian trams.... Went to the 'Painted Ladies' - 7 Victorian Houses, slightly disappointed, I suppose we were thinking that they were going to be more colourful. Ate at an Italian tonight - the night life is interesting here; bars are absolutely full (they are mostly wine bars here - so 1980s) - so much so that there is nowhere to have a relaxing drink....

Had another excellent day! Weather perfect - clear blue sky. Started the day with a drive; went down the crooked road, then over the 'Golden gate' bridge and then toured the Golden Gate Park. The crooked road was very crooked, the bridge very large and the Park expansive and being well used (as it was a Saturday and families were out playing soccer.....). After lunch at our favourite restaurant (Squat and Gobble Cafe!) we returned to our favourite pastime of Pier 39 and riding the Tram. We finished the afternoon off with an lovely pint in the Irish Pub next to the Tram terminus - very lively. For dinner we found a lovely Pizzeria on Lombard Street - amazing that we have only just discovered a group of restaurants just before we leave.... Tomorrow - off to LA.
