January 1 isn't a real big deal here. The Thais have their own calendar based on Buddha rather than Christ. (It's the year 2551 by their calendar.) Their New Year, called Songkran, is in April and receives a much larger celebration. The Western New Year is rather tame. We went dowtown for the countdown and fireworks. It was crowded, hot, and didn't feel particularly exotic or exciting, except that the countdown was in Thai rather than English. So that was pretty cool. I just posted a few photos. But the upcoming Songkran Festival should be much cooler.
