Flag of Norway  , Western Fjords,
Thursday, August 6, 2009

Saw Norway's old capital city.  It was rainy and overcast but it still looked inviting enough to want to live there.  Until I heard that it has 260 rainy days per year.  No way!

We drove down to Herdis' sister's place.  It sits right on the edge of a fiord between two mountain ridges.  It is beautiful.  Everything is here, it seems.  Not much sun though, not sure I could really live here.  Although it does boast fresh berries just growing on the bushes all around.  Quite exciting for someone who usually pays through the nose just to eat strawberries.  Shit ones too.

Tomorrow I might try and capture some blueberries before we leave.  Not gonna bake a pie (I AM on holiday), but it's fun to pretend I might.  I may also drive the car tomorrow.  On the wrong side of the road.  FUN.  Herdis' nephews are great value, they went diving before tea and caught a few fish and some mussles.  Gave them to the German tourists staying up the road.  Life here is pretty self-sufficient; no need for shops really.

Military service is compulsory though.  One son is currently doing his service in the navy.  Most boys on the West coast get into the navy.  East coast is army and central is airforce.  Strange concept for me.  But frankly, if I could move to Norway, I would.  High tax rates, but if you get sick, you get taken care of!  I like it here.
