This is my entry from our group blog. I thought I'd copy and paste it here for those of you who may not follow that one...
So, every time I come on here to write about something someone else already has! Instead, I will share with you all about what my job is here at the CEC.
The other guys in Monteverde have all been placed with classroom teachers and basically do what student teachers in Winnipeg would be doing. I, on the other hand, am in a bit of a unique situation. I have been placed with Dolly, the environmental education teacher. From what I can tell she is a very busy lady with many projects and lessons on the go. She also has a number of interns (what we are called here) working with her. While I do teach a few lessons, I mostly am working and assisting various projects. Here's a brief outline:
- Renewable Energy Curriculum
o This is my main project here. I am creating an Implementation Guide for the grade 5 and 6 Renewable Energy Unit. I am following the Manitoba Science Curriculum in its design and layout. I've broken it down into eight sections: Intro to Renewable and Non-renewable Energy, Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Geothermal Energy, Hydroelectic Energy, a Simulation Game (hopefully), Transportation Fuels, and Resources. At the beginning of our time here I spent the majority of my hours working on this. I've been falling behind due to other projects but hope to dedicate most of next week finishing it. I'm very excited about it! Plus, it will look so good on a resume to say that I've helped develop curriculum!
- Super Arte Costa Rica
o I have begun helping run this project with a volunteer named Antonio who has started similar programs in Paris, Guatemala, Honduras (and others?). He is teaching students how to make art projects out of recycled glass. He is also starting the program at the public high school in Santa Elena and hopes to build community by bringing the two schools together. Also, when enough pieces are created he will hold an exposition to sell the work at a local art gallery to raise money for the schools. I will be missing the expo unfortunately.
o For more information google superarteparis and superarteguatemala, etc.
- Wind Generator
o The University of Winnipeg has received a grant to build a wind generator at the school. Along with this, we have small model turbines. I will be running blade design lessons for grades 5 and 6. I have done one already with the grade 8s that went fairly well.
o Myself and about 3 students will be painting the tailfeather of the wind generator.
- Earth Day
o Earth Day is Wednesday and it's a big day for the Environmental Education Department! There are many plans for the day. I will hopefully be running a large game (Nature Stratego) for the grade 3 and 4 classes. Plans are still being worked out.
- Assisting Dolly
o I have helped Dolly with a few of her classes. I made recycled wallets with the grade 8 girls, have taken small groups of grade 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s into the forest to study mammals and other plants and animals. I have helped the other EE teacher, Milton, shell Guanacaste seeds with the grade 6s. I have also observed a few classes of grade 5 and 6s to get to know the students a bit better.
o Tomorrow I will be going to a water quality symposium. I'm not sure exactly what will be happening but the general idea is that the grade 10s have been participating in an adopt-a-stream program and have been conducting water quality assessments. The symposium will bring schools in the area together to discuss and present findings and plan for the future.
- Painting Recycling bins
o During Charlas (parent/teacher interviews) our whole group volunteered to repaint the recycling bins. They are filled with colourful native birds and other animals! They look great!
- Sleeping at the Kiosko
o For fun, a few of us will hike up to the Kiosko (an observation deck up in the forest on the property) and spend the night. So far, Dolly, Annie and I are doing it but we're opening it up to others that are interested. Very excited for next Monday night!
So, I think that's about it! I guess I'm a pretty busy lady!
