This part of the trip was already one of the greatest things either of us has ever done but the next day was the best day yet.  We left beautiful Santa Barbara continuing on the 101.  At Atascadero we took the 46 West which is a Classic U.S Route.  You could see why as it meandered though wine country, vineyards stretching for miles until you reach this mountainous plateau which looks down to the huge expanse of the deep blue.

We reached Pacific Highway 1 and as Jordon and Peter Andre so eloquently put it, we were in 'A whole new world'.   The route is exceptionally beautiful, as you follow the ocean there is a constant photographic view. There are various stops you can make along the way too, one of which was a beach that had hundreds of elephant seals..  A guy came over and told us there were 600 of them this year all the way from Alaska. They were flopped all over each other, out of reach of their predators, great whites and orcas which we are told are just beyond the rocks.  (I said 'Orks?' to the guy which Linds reminded me are from Lord of Rings)

We continue on, taking our time, stopping for lunch at an idyllic spot, a cafe jutting right out over the ocean and looking along the rocky coast.  The drive just got better as the road hugs to the cliffs, winding up and over the landscape.    This is some of the most amazing  scenery either of us has ever seen and by late afternoon we reach our first town, 'the man with no name's' Carmel, and on to the nearby fishing town of Monterey.  We finished our incredible drive at our hotel in Salinas and tucked into a huge meal at the Big Bear Diner.
