We caught a flight through Miami to Rio, arriving mid-morning--always the best time to arrive in a new place. It's not so early that you are still groggy, but not so late that you don't have a chance to do some exploring once you are settled.

We caught a cab to our hotel in Leblon, and then immediately set out for a walk through the neighborhood. After the obligatory stroll down the Ipanema mosaic path, we headed into the city and through the residential neighborhoods between the beach and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. Because we were there in the Brazilian winter, the temperature was mild and the city didn't seem overly frenetic, as Rio is often depicted.
