So I had my first day of work today at the Orchard. All you do is pick macadamia nuts off a tree with prickly leaves as fast as you can. They fall into nets which you then pour into buckets and carry that bucket to a giant bucket on the back of a tractor. After that, we did some shucking for several hours. This includes putting them into a machine that takes the skin off and there is seperating done afterwards. The nuts (haha i know) make their way into bags that are hung soon after. It is not an exciting process but the people are cool.
I am working with a kid from Thailand and Japan.
The couple that is hosting us is originally from South Africa and Indonesia and have sailed across the world occupying several different jobs. They have been in New Zealand for 7 years and love it. The view from their backporch is just amazing. They also have a pretty chill cat named Leo. The food is good and the living is for the most part, easy.
