It has rained every afternoon and all evening since our return but the mornings are clear and sunny. Yesterday, late afternoon, the rain became a deluge with thunder and lightening and power outages. About dusk we were bombarded with hundreds of these nasty insects I thought they were some kind of moth, but Pryiyan told us they were flying termites that get disturbed out of their mounds every time it rains
We've walked the Botanical Gardens, which were begun in 1371 by one of the early kings. Some of the trees were positively gigantic; the park was a beautiful array of exotic trees and flowers and....in one section there were huge fruit bats with wing spans of approximately 18 inches flying and hanging from a couple of the trees near the path. The non-blood sucking type so not interested in us.
We've done some shopping and I admit to a short affair ... with a blue Sapphire. He encased my finger and whispered sweet nothings to me for a fifteen minutes before I regained my senses. Every other shop here is a jewelry shop all willing to give you certificates of authenticity as it is well known that many stones are fakes. How would you know? We've visited the local market and had tea at the Queens Hotel. There are many brands of clothing made here in Sri Lanka (Cherokee, Eddie Bauer, etc.) and the main mall in town you can find overruns or whatever, some with the tags removed, at very slow prices. Here my resistance failed me. Enuf said. Yes, I did some Christmas shopping and consequently had to buy a bigger piece of luggage. Shame.
