Where I stayed
We got up at 7:00 in order to be ready for breakfast by 7:30 and leave as soon as possible. We went straight to Dinkelsbuhl which is a smaller city surrounded by its original wall. We parked outside the city walls the way Rick Steve's tour told us. We walked across two footbridges and then through the gate into the city. We visited the Tourist Info place to pick up walking tour maps and set off for the first stop. The church on the Marktplatz, St. George’s Minster, was our first stop. There are so many churches that are starting to run together. We were disappointed that we couldn’t go up the tower as it is only open on Saturday and Sunday. After the church we set off in the wrong direction and so had to do some doubling back. One highlight of the tour was the Almshouse which is a half-timbered building used to help the poor during the Middle Ages
Next we went to Nordlingen, which is another city on the Romantic Road which goes from Wurzburg down to Fussen. Nordlingen is built in the middle of a large crater and is surrounded by city wall that are almost a perfect circle. Our purpose in stopping here was to climb the tower in St. Georg’s Church in the Zentrum (city center). On our way from the parking lot outside the city we saw a pair of storks nesting on top of the rathaus. We found out from a sign that they are called Hansel and Gretel. The climb was very long, first up a spiral stone staircase and then a wooden staircase to the top, 365 steps in all. The view was breathtaking in all directions. When we came down we bought a couple of magnets for souvenirs
Then we were off to Reutte, Austria, this time by way of the Autobahn as we were short of time, and the Romantic Road goes through every little town. It took us about two hours to get there. Larry, Derek, and I went out for supper at the Maximillian Hotel in the next village
We stopped at the shell station to get cold beers before we got back. We sat on our balconies and had our beers enjoying the moon rising over the mountains and the illuminated ruins on the hill across the meadow. Did I say we have a great view from our room at the Pension Garni Waldrast, just outside of Reutte.
