13:00 came around pretty quick & by the time we got back our tuk tuk was there waiting to pick us up. This was the start of what was meant to be 24 hours of travelling.
The plane was on time...that's about as good as it got! We were sat next to the engine which was so noisy we couldn't hear each other talk. It was probably something to do with the fact the plane was salvaged from World War 2
The flight flew by (excuse the pun) & we were in Bangkok before we knew it. Our train wasn't until 22:00 so we weren't in a rush to get there. We jumped on the Bangkok underground & got to Hualamphong train station for about 19:30. We hadn't really eaten since lunch so we went & grabbed something from one of the restaurants at the station. After dodging the cockroaches on the tables outside we eat quickly & left.
We knew our train was scheduled to take just under 14 hours to get there which meant we would need to get something to eat for the morning. We got a good mixture of bits & pieces from cashew nuts to jammy dodgers.
We were on the train for 21:30 with our bags put away safely & our beds organised. Lisa picked the top bunk, mainly because there was less likely to be cockroaches. Thai sleeper trains are a little different to the Vietnamese version. In Vietnam they were cabins of either 4 or 6 but in Thailand the entire train is one big cabin with a top & bottom bunk from one end to the other. The bottom bunks were converted into a table & chairs during the day which meant it was about as comfortable as a concrete slab
The night was long. From trains flying past at 100mph & scaring the life out of us to seeing a cockroach crawl up by my pillow with his family scurrying behind him, it was a restless night.
Lisa poked her little head down to me for about 07:00. I think she had a pretty decent nights sleep so she jumped down into my insect pit & watched a film with me.
The train was meant to get in at 13:05 so when it finally dragged itself in at 16:00 we were both pretty fed up. We jumped in a taxi & headed to our hotel, Mandala House.
