On Our Way to Varkala
Entry 22 of 28 | show all | print this entry |
We got up at 5:00 AM to pack up and head to the airport to catch the plane to Chochi. You might notice on the map that it is stil called Chochin. That is it's old name, like Bombay is the old name for Mumbai. They obviously haven't updated all the names on the map.
Anyway, we discovered that there is more than one airport in Mumbai and we had to go to the Sahara airport that is only for domestic flights and we flew with an airlines called Kingfisher. It is also a big manufacturer of bottled water. It's a fairly new airline, but is was really nice. They have those personal video systems in the planes and they gave you lots of food.
So, we got to Chochi and then we had to decide what we wanted to do. We decided that if we left straight away for the train station we would have time to catch the 1:00 PM train to Trivandrum and it also stopped at Varkala. So, we decided to get off at Varkala and check out the town.
The first thing we noticed when we got into Chochi was how helpful and nice everyone was. The people are genuinely happy to help you and always have a big, happy smile on their faces. It was a nice change from the touts we've been experiencing where all they are interested in is getting your money. We got on the train with no problems, but it was already crowded and it took us a while before we could find a seat. People were really nice and helped us get seats and get our lugguge stowed and out of the way of people. But, let me tell you, this train was as crowded as any train I've taken in Japan during rush hour. People were hanging out the doors and we had four people to a seat where three was crowded with people standing in the center. It was closterphobic to say the least. But everyone was very nice, cheerful and were interested in chatting with us.
We managed to squeeze out of the train after about a five hour ride in this sardine can. It was tuff getting out before the train left because we had so much luggage and it was so crowded. We weren't sure we were going to get out.:-)
We found a room to stay the night, but it wasn't the room we had wanted. Varkala is a beautiful place. I think we are going to stay here a few days.
