Shop Until You Drop, But Not in the Streets!

Jaipur is currently having a gabage strike. All the garbage workers are on strike and from the looks of it, they have been striking for more than a week. The town is covered in garbage. I have never seen so much garbage in a city ever. The funny thing is that we have gotten so used to garbage on the streets that it didn't really phase us too much. We just walk around it like it's the most natural thing to be. That's a little scarey to me.:-) There were a bunch of protesters marching on the main market street in the old city. They were carrying a stretcher with a stuffed Prime Minister doll laying on it as if they were in a funeral march and were taking him to be burned. Jaipur is called the pink city, but it is so dirty it should be called the soot city. It is also the most crowded, traffic packed city of all the cities we've been in so far. Mumbai probably has more people, but they are spread out more. The inner city felt like a giant sardine can.
However, we had some of our best shopping in Jaipur. Everything was cheaper here and bargaining was good. So, we found a number of good deals.

I'm not sure if it is the ancient name, but it is the contemporary name. I guess they renamed almost all the cities in India since most of the names were given to the cities by the British. At least, that's what I've been told by many people here.

Is Mumbai the contemporary (and ancient) name for Bombay?
