Today was one of the few leisurely days we've had since we started our trip from Tucson. :-) We took at walk to the Blue Hole National Park that's across the highway from Ian Anderson's Lodge. There is an $8 entrance fee and the actual Blue Hole is pretty close to the Warden's Post where we entered the park. It's a really pretty little pool, created from a sink hole in a cave system. But the weather was humid and overcast with the threat of rain coming soon. So we decided to walk the little Hummingbird loop trail instead of swimming in the hole. The mosquitoes were also eating us up. The trail was only 1 1/2 miles long so it didn't take us long to hike it. I can't get over how thick this jungle gets. It's hard to spot birds because you can't see them through all the jungle plants. We walked along another trail to the visitor center another 1 1/2. This trail kind of follows the highway. This was a pretty trail with interpretive signs about the different birds found in the area and lots of sweet fragrances. We wondered if the rain brought out the fragrances or if this area always smells so sweet. It started to rain just as we got to the visitor center. The rain felt good because it brought a little breeze and got rid of the mosquitoes. The visitor center was small with 3 octagonal buildings, one with displays of plants and animals hand painted and wall hangings hand embroidered of different birds in the park. One of the buildings was a Mayan Village Gift Shop. We ate lunch under the eaves of one of the buildings and then headed down the road back to the lodge.
I have never experienced humidity like it is here. It is so humid that even the paper in my journal is damp. It's like being in a steam bath without the heat. Everything is wet and the air feels stifling. I think I'm getting used to the warm weather because I was actually feeling cold today.
