Scoping Out Beaches

Today Dave took a hike up the Sleeping Giant trail which only a mile from our cottage. I decided to stay at the cottage and work on typing up my journal for a later upload. Since we were going to be hiking the next day, I didn't want to do yet another hike. When Dave got back, we decided to scope out new beaches that we did not go to the last time we were in Kauai. First we went to Moloa'a Beach. This was a really pretty beach, but the water was too ruff to even swim at, let alone snorkel. Since we are looking for good snorkeling beaches, we chalked it off as good for lunch, but not the kind of beach we're looking for.
Next, we tried to find Larsen's beach, but never found the beach access road. We kept found ourselves back at Moloa'a beach each time. I suspect roads have changed in this area since our guide book was published. We have version 3 and they are now on version 6.
The next beach we went to was Waiakalua beach. This beach looked like it would be good for snorkeling, but the parking was in a really remote place. Someone had left a note saying their truck had been vandalized the day before and were looking for information on who might have done it. The note looked like it might have been from a local. We figures if a local is having problems with vandalism, an obvious rental car had no chances. So, we scratched this beach off our list also. We could actually see Larsen's beach from here and it looked like it would also be good for snorkeling. But alas, we did not figure out how to get to it. It looks like you would have to go through private land.
So much for new beaches. We decided to head over to the fish market to pick up some sushi rolls for our hike tomorrow. We were disappointed to find they had sold out on their sushi. So, we had to come up with another idea for our lunch and dinner for our first day of backpacking. We went into Kapaa to see if we could find another fish market. We found one, but they didn't make sushi. We did find some smoked beef that looked really good and we decided to buy some of it for our second and third night dinners. We were planning to make ramen salad with cabbage, uncooked ramen, green onion, sunflower seeds, and the beef sliced into little pieces. The salad dressing Dave made ahead of time and brought with us.
We stopped at a coffee shop called Small Town Coffee Co. that offered free wi-fi. The coffee is really, really good here. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, have live music on some nights, and they also have a Community Exchange upstairs. It reminded me of the place that my sister Marilene frequents. I added some travelpod entries and uploaded pictures until Dave and I got too hungry to continue. We also decided we would come back to the coffee shop tomorrow morning for breakfast because it opens at 7:30AM.
We decided to go to a Japanese restaurant for dinner and order some sushi rolls to go. This worked out perfect. We went to Kintaro restaurant in Wailua. The food was really good, we both had Nabeyaki Udon. It was the best Nabeyaki Udon I have ever had. I couldn't eat it all and Dave helped by finishing mine after he ate all of his. The price was pretty good. The price for the sushi rolls was really good. They also have a section in the restaurant where they do Benihana style stir fry and a big sushi bar. It's a very big restaurant and there were a lot of locals eating there.
