Entry 2 of 7 | show all | print this entry

So I arrived in Hanoi in the afternoon and right away I saw how different of a world it is.  Literally 1 minute out of the airport on a minibus (about 2 bucks for 45 minute drive) on both sides all I could see was rice paddies, waterbuffalo, and ridiculous amounts of motorbikes.  I found my way to the center of the Old Quarter, and as soon as I got out of the minibus I was bombarded with offers for a bike ride, the best hotel in Hanoi, books, etc.  I somehow found my way through all of this to my hostel.  The Hanoi Backpackers Hostel, which I found out right away was a welcoming place with a lot of cool people.  I settled in, explored the crazy streets with amazing people and basically just a different world.  I came back to the hostel and got some food at a BBQ on the roof.  I met some cool people from Australia and the UK, starting chatting and having drinks.  We met a bunch of other people from all over and continued drinking into the night.  The next day was exploring the streets of Hanoi, checking out pagodas, markets, and as much shopping areas as you can stomach.  I met some interesting Vietnamese people, had some good conversations then later in the day made my way back to the hostel.  I met up with some of the people I had met and met some new people.  About 10 of us ended up going out for pizza of all things and then continued the drinking at an Irish pub not too far away.  It was trivia night which was fun and stayed out until 3 or so.  It was a good few days and I did find time to relax in there.  Tomorrow Im going to Halong Bay for a night to do some sightseeing, hopefully kayaking and who knows what else.  So far Im loving Vietnam and Hanoi.
