Christmas time for us this year was all about making gifts. One gift I made was the Hairy Bikers' Christmas Pudding Vodka. ( )  - vodka flavoured with spices and dried fruits by soaking for a few days. After straining, it is delicious served with lemonade. It turned out to be too good and didn't quite get wrapped up... As a bonus there is a jar of spices and vodka soaked currants and raisins left over, to be inventive with. We made the recipe with about 600ml of vodka.

Laura spent several hours making crystallised ginger, some dipped in chocolate. Laura followed James Wong's recipe in his book "Grow your own drugs" and cooked up 350g of ginger. It was a spectacular success. A by-product was some left over ginger syrup, sticky and too sweet, which we tried in lemonade and found it very hot!

But the really wonderful blend was of the two sets of left overs and a good slosh of ginger beer. It was so palatable that we chucked the spiced vodka back into the jar of soaked fruits and mixed the whole lot up with the ginger syrup. Make it a long drink with a good ginger beer and the result is, as a friend described it, a Christmas Pimms. It has sweet and spicy gingeryness. The alcohol is almost tasteless and thus the drink is extremely dangerous - the raisins rehydrated with vodka are bombs in the bottom of the glass to be enjoyed more than the maggot in a tequila bottle! Recommended with a slice of Laura's dad's Christmas cake!
