Here we go. post #1
Let's start with Playa del Carmen......
Playa del Carmen--one of the most beautiful places on the yucatan coast and definitely one of my fave beach destinations--located about 45 minutes, by car, from Cancun and ferry ride from Cozumel.
Airport--you will need to fly into cancun airport. After clearing customs, head to one of the stands offering transportation--INSIDE--do not leave and try to find a cab outside. They will give you the rate for a taxi (max 4 people) or bus. You can probably negotiate down a bit, but the one way trip will run you about USD 20 per person.
Stayed: The Reef Playacar--located on the beach in Playacar
Though the property is quite beautiful, situated next to the palacial Riu Palace Playacar, on the beach, I doubt i will be returning to this venue. The staff was alright, the spa and nightshift reception (a sweet guy who took care of my bloody foot after i dropped a glass near it) guys were great, but overall the bar, beach and restaurant staff werent very pleasant.
Playacar is an upscale residential area on one side with resorts lining the beach on the other side. Playacar is a $5 cab ride to 5th avenue.
Nightlife--my favorite topic here
In playa, whatever your age and whatever your interest, just head down to 5th avenue where you will find plenty of shopping and an array of bars, clubs, restaurants and lounges. Kartabar is a great place to start your night--its a shisha bar with a great selection of martinis...the kartabar martini is superyummy! Blue Parrot and Coco Maya are local favorites. Resident DJ at Coco Maya, DJ marvin, plays a mix of r&b and house while blue parrot has a DJ that mixes trance at the front entrance and the music seems to change daily with the DJ closer to the beach. AND they have swings instead of chairs for seating :) They both close at 430 am-ish. from there, if you are still in the mood to dance and party til the sun rises, head over to the more local-esq Santanera or Brahma Club (formerly dubai club).
Whatever you choose to do, you will undoubtedly have a great night on the town in PDC.
OH and if you are planning to pay with cash at the bars, you should convert your money to pesos. They all accept USD, but the exchange doesn't really work in your favor to do this.
Finally, should you decide to leave the beach for a little sightseeing while in the area, chichen itza--now a wonder of the world--is located nearby with tours running daily. A roundtrip bus ticket, the entrance fee and lunch will be provided for around USD 90. I do recommend it if you are in the area. I went many years ago, but hear that it is still definitely worth the trip.
Also about 20 minutes away is a fabulous (or so I recall) eco park, Xcaret.
