Day 46 - Leaving Flaming Gorge NRA, Colorado National Monument - August 5, 2008 - Tuesday
Packed up and headed to Colorado National Monument.  Very cool place.  Arrived around 1pm.  Stopped at the campground to register then headed to the Visitor Center.  After looking around, went back to set-up our tent.  Then went for a few short hikes.  It was nice that several trails were close to the campground.  We walked the Window Rock Trail then on to Bookcliff Shelter with great views of Independence Monument in Wedding Canyon, where John Otto the founder and first caretaker of the park was married.  Then we walked along the Canyon Rim Trail back to the Visitor Center.  We watched a short video about the monument.  Across the road from the Visitor Center was Alcove Trail, so we hiked that one, too.  We learned about the plants and rocks along the way.  We saw a rabbit, yuccas, cacti, Mormon tea and more.  After the hike we headed back to the Visitor Center for a Ranger Talk about lizards.
Walking back to the campground we got caught in a thunderstorm and waited it out at Bookcliff Shelter.  Lucky it was there.
We were pleasantly surprised by this area.  Enjoyed it a lot more than Flaming Gorge NRA.  This was the first place we saw cactus.
Day 47 - Leaving Colorado NM, Arriving Breckenridge to Visit Dad - August 6, 2008 - Day 47
We are heading on today, but first a few short hikes.  First stop was the Visitor Center - again - for a patch, postcards and this cute book for Isabella about Southwest animals.  While we were there we saw some folks making a car commercial.  Pretty cool.
We drove through the park and stopped at several overlooks and trailheads.  Stopped at Otto's Trail and walked out to the viewpoint.  Awesome.
Then stopped at Devil's Kitchen Trail which leads to a rock room formed by huge upright boulders.  Neat.
We made it to Breckenridge by 3:30pm.  I-70 followed the Colorado River most of the way and very nice.  The road elevation was high!  Over 10,000 feet in places.  A nice bike path followed the river, too.
We went out for pizza with dad.  Thanks, again.  Took showers and rested.  Life is good.
