After a huge breakfast on Monday morning we started north, stopping at the Battlefield of Culloden on the way, so i could begin to understand the history of Scotland, which can be basically summed up by saying - lots of wars - mainly against the English.
Our exchange cottage is in Embo, a former fishing village and now a quiet beachside town about 5kms north of Dornoch. The house is the end of a row of terraces, about half a km from the beach. It's big and comfortable and we have settled into a routine of doing a walk in the morning, a quiet time in the afternoon and then another outing ( usually involving a wee dram), in the evening
On Tuesday we did The Big Burn walk, which is reported to be one of the top 5 short walks in UK. It was up a pretty glen to a waterfall, with lots of creek crossings along the way. Needless to say, we all enjoyed it.
Yesterday we broke our pattern by doing a full day trip to beautiful Loch Ness. We all enjoyed Loch Ness and the ruins of Urquhart Castle - ruined as a result of a war of course - made a dramatic foreground to the loch.
The weather has been just superb. We haven't had the very high temperatures of the south of England, but 23 is a hot day up here and it's been that all week. It's been a bit cloudy on and off and close to the coast, the wind has a bit of a nip, but today is very sunny and warm.
