Day Fifty Six

Left Biloxi early to once again beat the bad weather predicted. We got some heavy rain at the dock last night and it really played havoc with some group having a dock party. Once it cleared, however, everyone resumed and it seemed a good time was had by all. We enjoyed listening to the music, but only until 11...then I had a hard time going to sleep with it blasting about 4 boats away...I knew we were getting up early, but what can you do? I finally put my earplugs in and drowned them out.
I guess my good weather karma continues to hold...despite, once again, being surrounded by rain, lightning and thunder, we were spared. Several times we cleared the decks above thinking we'd have to helm from below, only to see the weather pass us by. Luckily all the bad weather did not impact the waves and we had a pretty smooth ride. Once we entered the rigolets, which is the entrance to Lake Pontchartrain, we picked up an incoming current and whizzed by at a whopping 10 knots...I know you car, aviation and Harley drivers find that amusing, but it's a moment in a trawler's life...especially when we keep her at 1900 RPM's for better fuel burn!
By the time we got to Slidell it was so hot that I collapsed on the forward bunk and took an hour nap...very unusual for me. We rented a car, did laundry (spent three hours since there was only one machine) and had the most eclectic dinner yet. In an effort to eat up all leftovers and use up all vegetables on board, we had a mango dip, tuna salad, fried potatoes and onions and chips... This seems like a good marina, although pre-Katrina they had quite a number of docks. They have rebuilt two and we are in one of the only two transient slips they have. I was lucky enough to call about two weeks ago and reserve it for this week. We could find no available transient slips in New Orleans...I'm not even sure there are any there at all. At least they have working, airconditioned showers and a laundry room. They even have a fitness center and use of a pool. Not bad...
I am flying to Dallas tomorrow to stay with a friend from Southwest, CJ. Then Monday I will stay with another friend Kris Stewart, then I'll be at the Four Seasons with another friend delivering the program for a client, then Thursday staying with my friend Karen for the night before heading back to the boat on Friday. We will resume our travels from Slidell on Saturday...hopefully the floods up the Mississippi River will not interfere with us getting across the locks...I'll continue my blog from Dallas as Tom and Bev will be sending me pics...they plan on seeing a cousin and some old friends while here. ...more later More thumbnails ...
