Got up this morning to warm blueberry muffins and a newspaper on deck...good as promised. Sanibel Marina is one of the nicest marinas we have stayed in. The staff is friendly, it has a small quaint feeling to it and the setting is beautiful. Hard to believe that Hurricane Charlie dessimated this whole island in '06 and here they are, practically back to normal. Temperatures have risen dramatically...so much so that we couldn't get over how Tenacious is holding her own...didn't even need any air this morning.
We left the marina about 9:30 headed towards the J N Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in search of the elusive Florida Gator for Gene. After riding 12 miles into the Refuge in the sweltering heat, we saw one rabbit and a number of nesting Osprey...we finally got to the Alligator viewing area only to discover that it was closed....so we left without seeing any. Went touring the island. It is a beautiful island which has not been spoiled by beachfront condos...very quaint. We stopped off to swim in the ocean and collect shells. Sanibel Island is famous for the shells one can find.
Had lunch at the Island Cow, and, despite the funky name, it had excellent food. Returning to the boat late afternoon we were spent, having ridden the entire length of the island. Tomorrow we head off to Venice, some 55 miles away. My time with Gene and Maggie is quickly drawing to a close as they are headed back to Houston on Wednesday morning, having helped me navigate some 1200 miles from Oriental. Beverly and Tom will be flying in on Thursday afternoon. I'll think more about that tomorrow. Needless to say, this past month has been like a living breathing classroom in boating, navigation and adventure seeking for me and I am indebted to both Gene and Maggie for their mentorship and fine boatsmanship. As an added bonus, we have become friends and will continue the friendship as neighbors on the same dock at Waterford Harbor when I return.
