Arrival in Madrid
Entry 1 of 20 | show all | print this entry |
My first day in spain was great, I toured the Museo del Prado and saw the special picasso exhibit for free (sundays here have free entry to most museums!). I also walked around the botanical gardens, then returned to the Cats Hostel (great place with friendly people and a bar). I bought some vino (for only 4 euro) and went out with some of my roommates for paella and beer to watch the football at a place which has the beer on tap at each table and a tv screen which tells you how many litres your table has had to drink! Just awesome!
The next day I managed to meet a guy from israel on his way home from mexico, of all places, and walked around a bit with him. Then went to the Palacio Real, which is quite beautiful but the tour is really boring and crowded better to walk around at your own pace. Also the Catedral next door has amazing windows and a really beautiful interior.
Afterwards I walked around the palace gardens the jardines de sabatini, pl. de espana, and pl. del oriente - all recommended to include for a lovely visit in madrid. A bit far from the hostel though, as i realised way to late and had to run through town to get back just in time for the Austalia vs Italy match at the hostel... really shit loss, we played to well for that!!! That night i returned to the football pub with the beer on tap with lauren and some yanks (we had more than 8 litres!) and then later a bigger group of us went out to a couple clubs around pl. del angel, which all give out free shots!
The next morning i spent a couple hours rolling around in bed and running to the bathroom -the smallest stalls in the world by the way- (so much for free shots!) and then another couple hours on the metro bouncing between different stations in search of the right one to buy my ticket to bilboa from, shitty morning, great metro though.
I did manage to redeem the afternoon with a grand walking tour of madrid along with a visit to the Parque del Buten Retiro, really beautiful. Around 9 Lauren and i set out to watch the spain vs france match in the pl. del sol, oh my god sooooo many people there we didn't really see much football the first half but we did have fun running all over the place and being squished in the crowd for the spanish goal. For the second half we returned to watch at the hostel bar and had a grand time with the help of alot of sangria and a little food!
That evening I went out with lauren and some other americans we met to the Palacio, a great place with incredible mohitos (costs 8 euro to enter but first mohito is free) and even has dancers in their lingerie on stage - both a chick and a rather sweaty gay guy! (photos up soon). We left around two and not quite ready to sleep me and peter went back to the pirate bar from the night before finally hit the hay around 4... so much for not drinking hey!
Didn´t quite make it to any museums the next day but did make it to my bus to head to Bilboa.
