Canal Boating with the Olds...

Anita soon announced that her parents were coming to stay...
For two weeks...
I wasn't particularly looking forward to their arrival...
Basically "Meeting the Parents" after a few months with a girl isn't really up there on my "things to do" list...
It turned out fine though... They were really lovely people... cute, even.
They took Anita's room while Anita and I shared my uglier, less feminine room...
It really is great to have your own room when you live together with a girl... you can have all your stuff organised and where you want it, make a mess and leave it for however long you want, post all your own art and photographs on the walls, you can be alone in there too...
I really recommend it... A shared bedroom is always feminine...
Anita's parents, Tony and Sherri went away on quite a few day trips and overnight stays while they were staying with us. They invited us to go on their last one...
Up to Nottingham we drove... Most of you would know Nottingham from the tales of Robin Hood... which would have been exciting to learn about...
but we were in for a spot of canal boating...
The Nottingham Canal was once a 14.75 mile long canal between Langley Mill and Nottingham. It was used to transport coal and building materials and brought quite a lot of growth to the area... It's just a tourist attraction these days... but it makes for a lovely afternoon chugging along on the water...
We arrived in Nottingham in the late afternoon...
It really isn't the nicest of places to visit... Nottingham has the second highest crime rate in all of the UK(after London) and there had in recent weeks been a drive-by shooting on some school children... a little girl was killed...
These sort of things are very uncommon in general... at least where I'm from...
Anita and I dropped off our bags at our shitty hotel... Our Sleep Inn... I hate those places... They charge the equivalent of $120 for a tiny little, stale-aired room with a bad view... the motorway...
After a quick dinner in a kitsch American resaurant we headed in for an early night.
In the morning we set off on the canal...
Those canal boats are a lot of fun to drive... and very simple...
The locks are a little more exciting though... It really is an ingenious... a system for raising or lowering boats between stretches of water at different levels.
I'm not going to explain exactly how it works, that would bore most of you... but if you are interested check this out:

After our day of boating we climbed up to the castle on the hill... It seemed as though it was too late to go inside, but we made do with the medievil festival set on the garden grounds...
We ate roast boar(from a spit) and watched two grown men run around and hack at each other with large heavy swords... just for fun... ha!
All in all it was a pretty OK trip... we gladly went home...
Toni and Sherri flew home to NZ happy with their England tour...
