We got the Noosa Everglades canoeing tour thrown in when we booked our Whitsundays and Fraser Island trips and weren't sure whether we'd bother to do it or not. Since we had the time we decided to do it, why not? Turned out to be a brilliant trip, hard work but brilliant. We were picked up at our hostel and brought to a house to pick up the tents, roll mats and containers to take in the canoes. Got chatting to the other people who were coming with us and they seemed like a sound bunch!

Caught a water taxi to a small wooden cabin at the start of the everglades, got a quickie lesson and packed up our canoes. It took us a couple of hours to row to our campsite and we stopped along the way for a snack at a remote picnic area inhabited by cheeky goannas. When we arrived at the campsite we all pitched our tents and cooked up some grub before going for a dip in the noosa river. The river is a glassy black due to the tannin coloured water and is nicknamed the river of mirrors.

After getting to know everyone we all settled at the picnic tables for a card game and a few beers. When it started to rain we walked to a covered area about 200 metres from the campsite. The rain got heavier and heavier until it was so torrential that if you stood in it for 30 seconds you got soaked to the skin. So we played cards and drinking games until the small hours and waited until the rain cleared, hoping the tents would stand up to the monsoon!

The next day we got up and some of the crew went off to see the big sandblow a couple of hours up river. We decided we'd seen enough sandblows by then and rowed up to the sandblow walk just for the fun of it! The trip was gorgeous and peaceful and we were shattered by the time we got back to the campsite. Another night of card games and rain!

After we got back to the wooden cabin and caught the water taxi back to dry land we were wlecomed to the bus with some piping hot chips, the best chips ever!
