It was pissing rain when we left Dunedin!! Heavy and slippery. As the drive went by, it became a bit clearer. We arrived in Te Anau and relaxed in the afternoon. in the evening, we went to the glowworm caves. Each cave we have been visiting so far has been very different from one another. For the first time we saw a river flowing in the caves. We walked through the amazing grotto's and then took a small boat (still inside the caves) and were driven in the dark only lit by the millions of glowworms everywhere. They looks like little blue stars. It was amazing (no photo allowed, though!!)
The tail of the larva is actually glowing to attract food (like moths) They grow some kind of fishing net made of mucus that is sticking to their prey. Then the larva goes down and eat it!! Sometimes they just eat one another! We saw a video at the visitor centre and it was quite crazy!! After a while, they build a cocoon and become flies for a few days, just to get time to lay some eggs and the cycle begins again. Now, everyone is well educated on glowworms, I hope?
