25.04.09: We started the day by continuing down the coast, admiring the surfers wrestling the waves. It looks like such a physical sports. The waves were huge and their skills was impressive. We walked along the cliffs of Sawtell. We did not see any dolphins. Apparently, they are best seen at dusk and dawn. Time to go to the small town of port Macquarie. We got just in time for the feeding time in the koala hospital. They have a large patient boards at the entrance, indicating their date of arrival and their sickness.
Most of them have been run over by cars at night. A big problem among koalas is chlamydia!! They get really affected by it, getting blind and all their muscles cannot function properly. They also get the "wet bottom" syndrome as a result: they cannot stop to urinate and it is really painful. We have been told that you can hear them cry while going to the toilet. After this visit, we went to the seaside where rocks have been painted over the years. The jetty looks so colourful. People grab their paintbrush and leave a trace behind: family holiday, honeymoon or memory of a loved one who passed away..you can spend hours reading it all...
