This morning we left Lima to discover real Peru. We left the tall buildings behind us and began to discover the wide desert and admire the big mountains, similar to what you might see in Iran or Oman. On the road, we saw the damage the 2007 earthquake had done to the region with big piles of rubble by the side of the road. The people were living in tiny square houses with brick roofs or in small straw houses, some with their cattle living next to them. It is the first time we have been confronted by so much poverty since we started our trip. We followed the coast road that had loads of chicken farms on one side. The roads were really dusty and once or twice we passed through fairly big towns where the traffic was totally chaotic. Some people were driving vehicles that resembled tuk tuks (with 3 wheels). We noticed that the women are wearing more traditional clothes, such as the famous colourful ponchos and hats.

After a long journey, we finally arrive at our hotel and have a bit of rest 1

. It is really hot and dry during the day and pretty chilly in the evening.

26.10.08. This morning we get up early to visit the Islas Bellastas, aka the backpacker's Galapagos. We are the first one to leave the port. We first past by an island with huge engravings representing at first 3 candles, but in fact are the description of the resources of the country. The island looks really rocky and the cliffs as the ones you could admire in Brittany or Ireland. There are millions of birds of various species flying around. There are also lots of penguins walking around. The funniest was the hundreds of sea lions everywhere. Some were lying under the sun, other fighting for the attention of a female, some other doing tricks in the sea. It is amazing the way they are laying on top of each other on the sand. Nobody leave on this island except one man. Every 6 years, men come and pick up the guano (bird poo) to make some fertilizer. We were all really enthusiastic about this trip which enlighted us with such an amount of wildlife on a little island.
