What I did
We got down from Aiguille De Midi at noon, but missed the train. There is one every hour , so we took the next one. The views from Montevers was just breathtaking. Its the nearest I have been to a glacier and you actually take a tour into one but its closed for the season.
I love the brilliant blues and the golden hues against the white white snow. We take off at about 3 pm down the trail. Hmm ... not many are walking down and we soon found out why - trekking down on snow and mainly icy path is not easy
We were first so excited about the beautiful scenery and we started taking pictures at every turn. But then I realise how slow and difficult it was to walk down and therefore the 2 hours may take longer.
I start panicking and then try walking down quicker to make time. It is tough even with the hiking pole. I am slipping , falling and at one time just slided down the path. Fun now in retrospect but fear creeped in and the snow path seem unending. I dont want to be lost in the dark woods - cold and in complete darkness because we were unprepared - with no lights nothing.
As we could hear the last train, it fuelled the panic more . I dont know, lost my nerve, age creeping, my sense of adventure fled and I am now trully rushing Chung. In between, he was still stopping to take pictures because the view was amazing.
Finally, we reached the non-icy path and as I was more relaxed but something else crept up - ache and pains along my thighs and calves.. How can this be , I walked for a whole day in Czech Republic without any problem and here I am - just nearly two hours down hill and am feel pain , sharp ones at that as I take every step
I finally reach the final leg but my legs just wobbled and gave up. I could hardly stand. Every step I took was torture. Is this it? Is this what it feels to have a stroke or a heart attack? Chung decides to walk down and since the place was deserted, will drive from the car park up the path which I swear is actually not accesible to car.
As I sat on the grass, I debated as to whether I should call for help and assistance from another young couple. My mind is full of - I may die right here on the grass of Chamonix , beautfiul as it maybe , its not how I imagine this holiday to end. Then, my hero finally gets to me in the wonderful car that we rented.
A Wonderful, beautiful ride back to the hotel , yes best decision made in this trip is to rent a car. But drat - the mattress is on the floor and I have to bend and kneel over. I scream with pain with every stress I continue to put on my legs. ...
