It is not difficult to drive around Chamonix and renting the car was the right decision. Whilst the town is small and an easy walk , to enjoy Chamonix, you need the car.  You are suppose to get free shuttle bus service but the many times we drove around, I didnt see that many buses.

Being in the second half of October also meant that Summer had ended, the tourists are out, things have quieten down and everything is being repaired. There were quite a number of roadworks and so the roads were blocked and made into one lanes. So it was a lot of one way streets which made driving a drag.

Looking for the hotel was not easy either as we could not get a road map of Chamonix as the tourist information office was closed ( we arrived on Sat and it was closed after noon). After driving a few times in circle , I decided to stop at a hotel to look at the map and to ask for directions. We finally find Les Balcons. Its actually serviced apartments which have fantastic views of the Alps. Hmm to wake up to the view of the Alps would really be something.

Its our 20the anniversary and expectations for a romantic retreat was high especially when you couple it with million dollar views. Unfortunately, my husband rented the studio apartment and the sofa bed was a joke - two single beds on top of each other. Reminded me of my son's bed back home. The apartment was nice and spacious but the bed was really disappointing - I want my soft , bouncy bed with nice sheets. Hubby tried to change the room but it was apparently full. Well, he then pulled both mattress on the floor which ordinarily would be romantic but at my age, it meant literally crawling out of bed. But the view was something else and it made up for the little inconvenience including a WIFI that did not work.

We drove into town again this time to buy groceries as we remembered that shops are closed on Sundays as well. Parking is quite a drag in Chamonix and this is off peak season. Hate to think what it is like during f the peak season.

We walk around town which is quite dead because its off season but the views dont go off season and it is absolutely breath taking especially at dusk and when the sun sets and the snow cap Alps light up in orange fire against the clear blue sky.

Gorgeous scenery from the time we landed in Geneva...
