Our first stop today was Buffalo, Wyoming. We visited the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum. The staff would not allow photographs inside the museum so you can only see the photo I took of the exterior. Jim Gatchell was a history buff who collected a large amount of old west memorabilia.
We next stopped Fort Phil Kearny. This fort was one of a series that the U.S. Army built after the Civil war. There is nothing left since it was burned down, twice. The interpretive center had a great deal of information about the early wagon trains and the tremendous hardships they endured. However, they took great care to explain that the settlers displaced the peoples that already lived on the land. The Native Americans attempted to resist, but the Army and settlers kept arriving.
The next stop was at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. This was our second visit to Little Bighorn. It is a must see experience. The staff is composed of Native Americans who give a moving account of the battle. You learn about the events that preceded that encounter and the aftermath. The Park Ranger demonstrated the particular uniforms and arms worn by the solders and the dress and arms of the Crow and Lakota peoples.

Why was the ranger holding the rifle like that? He did not look like a happy camper. :o)
