More mountains! We liked the last one so much we headed for the "Japanese Alps". We based ourselves in Matsumoto, and did seperate trips in the National Park. The autumn leaves that Japan is famous for lived up to their reputation. The highest peak we went up was about 2700 metres, but we cheated and took a bus :)
There were lots of hot springs, and we went in one that was outdoors and overlooked the mountains. Everyone chats to each other in the bath. One night we stayed on a freezing cold shed for which we were charged 30 pounds. We got a bit fed up with the expense of Japan at this point! On the last day we visited the castle in Matsumoto, and were given our very own tour by an extremely enthusiastic guide who was very happy to practise his English on us. We were very glad we had taken the time to go to the Alps, as it is a bit of a trek from the big cities in Japan, so not many people get the chance to go.
