We slept in longer than we had wanted too, but we were up just in time for lunch. We headed to downtown Savannah to eat at the renowned Paula Dean restaurant The Lady and Son's. It is a 3 story restaurant that still has a line at all hours of the day. We were seated quickly and immediately served fresh hot cakes and cheese biscuits. The lunch special was an all-you-can eat southern buffet ; right up our alley. We stuffed our faces with fried chicken, fried pork in tomatoes, butter soaked mashed potatoes with thick gravy, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, creamed corn, string beans, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, and lima beans....we skipped the salad bar....for dessert we had peach cobbler and a banana pudding . Very good home-style cookin; nothing spectacular, but worth every penny.

Okay, adios Savannah and on to Atlanta. About 240 miles WEST!!!! This marks a turning point in our trip, we are actually working our way west. We have driven almost 1200 miles an not gotten any closer to California. The other good news is that we are driving away from Hurricane Fey.

We decided to make a stop on our journey to Atlanta, attempting to learn some more about Georgia. We chose Ocmulgee National Monument about 80 miles outside the city. What a waste of time. It is seriously 8 mounds of dirt and grass where they "think" ancient civilizations settled . We wandered around for an hour, then decided to sit in the visitor center with the 80 year old security guard and look at arrow heads. Awesome.

We got to Atlanta at about 7PM and drove around downtown , thru Georgia Tech, turner field, etc.....nice place. We then headed to our dinner spot, a hole in the wall, dive of all dive bars, the Gravity Pub. We were the only two people with collared shirts and no tattoos. What we ate probably took at least 5 years off our lives; seriously. We split 2 dishes (if you can call them that). First, The Vandross, two 1/4lb. cheeseburgers with bacon sandwiched between grilled glazed donuts .

Second, the mulligan....are you ready for this........a hot dog, encased in ground beef (then deep fried), then served on a large bun, smothered in chili, melted cheese, and bacon ...... Add it all up = heart attack. We also had onion rings....ha. We cleaned out plates, left immediately, and slept in the car for 15 minutes before we could drive back to our motel. Nothing else can happen tonight, can't move...can barely least the bathroom is clean...for now.
