Catherine and I have sore arms from pinching each other. Its hard to actually believe we are here. We left Rio this morning and have arrived on Ihla Grande which is a remote island off the coast of Brazil. No cars are allowed on the island so its very quiet and sleepy. Just what we need after a bustling Rio. We haven't explored it yet so will update you when we have.
Yesterday we got to see Botofogo vs Santos play in the Maracana.. one of the worlds biggest stadium. The stadium holds more than 90,000 people but the official record is that they squashed in 200,000 spectators in 1969 for a big World Cup game. It wasn´t as packed yesterday but it was a cracking game.. 2-1 at half time to Botofogo and with 20 minutes to go Santos were 2-3 up. Botofogo fans booed two of their own players who were eventually substituted. 10 minutes to go and it went to 3-3... Fogo then got a free kick, about 40 yards out... and scored to make it 4-3. The stadium exploded, the fans went nuts. You couldnt have asked for a better game.
On Friday night we went to the Lapas Street Party with two Brazilians who worked at our hotel. They showed us all the best spots and we both had a great night. It was a bit like Temple Bar on a Saturday night but with Samba music instead of Britney Spears.
Well, enough for now. Time for a beer. We will update some pics soon.
