All hell broke use yesterday. It was inevitable; people have breakdowns
on trips like these especially in such tight circumstances as the truck. Unfortunately
I took part in the fighting but it was ridiculous. To begin to explain this I
have to explain how storage works on the truck. There is personal storage found
beneath all the seats in the truck, food and tent storage under the floor
boards and all other storage like chairs, kitchen stuff, water, ect under the
truck. Well the inside of the truck is our domain and we have all claimed our
seats but due to the chaos of the beginning of the trip a lot of peoples seats
have changed and their stuff has stayed in the same place. Well this has been a
source of much debate in the truck since the beginning but it is now week four
and some individuals have taken it upon themselves to dictate to all the
passengers that all of your stuff needs to be located beneath the seat in which
you sit, which sounds good in theory but many of us didn’t want to bother
moving our stuff and were perfectly happy leaving it where it was. Well with
all the things that come along with being privilege to a dictatorship we were
told either we move our stuff or someone moves it for us, though this was not
said till we had debated the issue for an hour or more. In the end it calls
came down to Kati and my compartment versus the couple which sits on it since
they wanted their stuff under them and we didn’t want to move. There were many
alternatives given which would have inconvenienced everyone equally but it
seems some people are unable to compromise on such issues and we were forced to
move our stuff, which by the way was not to under our seats because those areas
were too full for our backpacks and sleeping stuff but some people just don’t
see the situation as an inconvenience to anyone else but themselves. At the end
of the day though, all was sorted and it wasn’t really that horrible. It just
sparks rebellious natures when someone who is supposed to be equal is demanding
that you do something.

Oh but the day of our reckoning was not finished there. Since tension
was high among our group from the previous situation it was only inevitable
that other problems which had been brewing for weeks were going to come to the
surface. With a couple of us still sitting in the truck discussing other
problems such as the power strip use in the truck a certain person decided to
start an all out yelling match about whether the sides of truck should be up
all the time. Well the back of the truck is freezing or that’s what I’ve been
told but I do see poor Kev in the corner in the back huddled in beanie, down
jacket and wrapped in a blanket so I can only infer that it is freak’n
freezing. But this other personal thought that the sides should be up all the
time because he paid X number of dollars and doesn’t want to watch and take
pictures of things off the truck through plastic, smudged flaps, which I
actually agree with but not at the expense of those around me. All of us tried
to come up with compromises but the guy was adamant and threatens to put up
both sides every morning when it’s excessively cold for the whole truck.
Obviously there was no compromise which would have appeased him but some people
are just like that I guess. The guy then buggered off to his tent and never
came back out to help his group with cook duty. Real mature.

For guys who are reading as well as anyone from the African trails
group please doesn’t read further, this is a warning.

So, I’ve reached day 12 of my period and it hasn’t lightened up or even
pretended like it may stop anytime soon. Now I’m getting sharp pains in my
abdomen and I’m getting a little worried but I talked to Summer and she said
she once was on hers for 2 months! Though it was relieving to know there
probably is nothing wrong with me it really makes me wonder when this god
forsaken thing will be finished! Do you even know what a pain it is to have to
deal with your period in a bush camp with no running water? Burying sanitary
supplies in the ground or trying to inconspicuously put them in the clear trash
bags that we use for trash. Really unpleasant and all we have from here out are
bush camps because we start the drive through the Sahara and onto Mauritania.

There is some uneasiness about crossing the border into Mauritania with
all the attacks on Westerners. I recommend you read about them yourself, just
look up Mauritania kidnapping for the last two months. The most recent of which
was a truck at the end of the convoy which they found empty after they realized
that it was missing. Jeremy says that Alkada is just targeting missionaries and
press which plan to relay the problem in a negative light but since I haven’t
had internet to read the articles for myself I don’t know what to believe. It’s
funny according to our lonely planet guide, Mauritania is one of the safest
places to travel in Africa, but Africa changes daily and new conflicts begin
and end making it impossible to predict conditions especially on the West coast
which has almost no tourism. Gavin and Summer were telling a couple of us
stories about other trips some from African Trails and others from similar
companies and they are pretty early. According to them it is not unusual to
lose a passenger in one way or another because it’s Africa. Then there are the
really scary stories which I don’t want to repeat but make me wish I had
citizenship from another country.

The road stops are also beginning. I’m not
sure what they say to Summer and Gavin but we usually leave them relatively easily.
They will begin to get worse in the coming months.
