Hola! My tres dias in Oviedo, Spain was maravilloso!!! Came home speaking a bit of Spanglish - so please humor me - and if you don't know a word... here's a free translater online www.freetranslation.com
My flight was bit late (45 minutes!!!) because there was an extra bag when they did their baggage counts...so i suppose I am glad they recounted - we don't want any extra baggage...specially since they let me lock my suitcase without looking in it first...
My first glimpse of the coast of Spain was magnifico!!! The cliffs are dark gray and the rolling hills are bright green, with plenty of large pine trees covering large areas. I wasn't expecting it to look so much like a forest, but many areas do. As I landed, the view over the forest and beyond the grassy hills was the blue blue blue sea. It was GORGEOUS!!
My Cousin Yajaira and my Aunt Janis were adorable! I saw them peering through the tinted glass, trying to block the reflection so they could see me..I had to wave to catch their attention. I finally got my luggage and we were off! I also met Yaja's boyfriend, Maximo (not sure of spelling), who is completely adorable and quite the gentleman.
Yaja had to be at work at 6pm, so we rushed off to a bar to have "a wine" and after two large glasses of Spanish Roja, I was grinning from ear to ear. We stopped by the apartment (which is very cute - filled with furniture Maximo made from metal and wood - he is incredibly talented and creative), dropped off my stuff and Yaja changed and we went to the cafe/bar she worked at. Janis and I sat and talked over wine for a few hours - it was very nice to catch up with her in an environment other then San Diego. I got to know her, and vice versa, probably for the first time ever.
We walked around the quaint town and shopped, had lunch and talked. I loved watching the relationship between my aunt and my cousin - they are very close - they also both have a refreshing perspective on the world - a perspective very different from the rest of my maternal family. Having grown up and having lived for years (respectively) in Venezuela and now Yaja living in Spain for over 4 years - gives them a broader, less "American" view of the world. To be honest, I don't know how much I like the American view of the world.
On tuesday, Maximo drove us all to Gijon, which is the adorable, beautiful beach town about 20 minutes north. There was a perfect picturesque view around every corner...we had lunch at a wonderful cafe near the town square (the whole idea of the town square is wonderful).
I shopped more that afternoon after arriving back in Oviedo... :)
Wednesday morning we drove up to the Christo on top of the mountain...what a wonderful view. The town of Oviedo is even sweeter when seen from above. I flew home on Wednesday afternoon, with promises that Yajaira and i will meet up in Spain again before I go back to the US. Hopefully Barcelona will be next...
Enjoy the pictures...
