The 3 hours drive to Canberra was lovely - sure not like the one from Adelaide to Alice Springs, which was pretty much scrub for almost 19 hours. Terrain to Canberra reminded me of the badlands and foothiills and the sunset was amazing - pinks and mauves, just like those back home! Hardly any services between the two cities - maybe 3 rest stops and a couple of towns. Canberra is very much a Government town, and a little likeI hear Ottawa used to be, before high tech moved in. Everything shuts down early (department stores at 4;30!) in the evening (and in Perth grocery stores close at 5 p.m. on Sunday). Anyway got into my hostel and it seems like quite a nice one, am in a 4 bed female dorm except one of the females (it's full) talks to her husband in Sydney late at night at early in the morning, on her cellphone in them room! I ended up today with a full blown cold and flu and so spent most of the day in bed except for when she was on the phone at 7 a.m., I got up, showered and went to the kitchen for breakfast. Then there is a huge children's school group staying here and they are everywhere and then the kitchen staff started cleaning up and the doors were open and froze me out. Am not a happy hosteller today. Just waiting for my friend to come and will try to feel a little better for a couple of hours then it will be back to bed for the drive back to Sydney tomorrow. Flight tomorrow night to Auckland - I am trying to get a single room in a hostel as I need to get better to enjoy my time there.
