Entry 29 of 107 | show all | print this entry

Can't believe I am already here in Bangkok  It is 10 a.m., 28 C and I am writing this at the 'Urban House Hostel' just off Silom Road while I wait until 2 at the most to check in. The Hostel Common area that I am currently sitting in at their computer, is list and airy one of the 4  Airport Express buses to the area I wanted to, only to find out from some wonderful Thai people that no, the AE buses go from the Terminal so I had to catch a (free) shuttle bus to go back to the terminal. It appears the shuttle going back was a staff bus, so the attendant came over to me and though she couldn't speak English,
I got the gist of what she was asking. Fortunately one of hte people who told me to take this bus was on it and spoke English so could let her know w hy I was going back to the Terminal. They then pointed out where (on a different level of this brand new airport) I should waited for the AE Silom bus.  Then I saw a kiosk where I could buy advance tickets only to be told I would need to wait until 9 a.m. to get on a bus and it was by then 7:30 a.m., having arrived at 6:10 and gone through Immigration, baggage etc.  So I asked what is the schedule and she said every 2 hours! Then I looked up and saw the AE 1 Silom bus drive up and she said I couldn't go on that one because I was the only booked, and it wouldn't go without at least 3 people. I asked when it was due to depart and she said in 15 minutes so I said I would wait.. About 2 minutes later she came up to me and said the bus was going to go because there were now enough people!  Well i wrote a whole bunch more but it just got erased, suffice to say I had the last few meters in a Tuk Tuk, for 200 baht which I gather is about 40 cents, it is like a bicycle with a motor with a little cart attached iwth a roof; going around corners is dicey, they don't waste ANY TIMe and it is quite open.
Packed plane arrived safely on time.  The Frankfurt airport is extremely big and good thing I was there 3 hours in advance of take off as by the time I checked to see why my cell phone didn't work - i thought it was the battery - but finally found it was dead it was time to find the security, not well marked and then the gate in an older section of the plane.  Anyway, got on the plane, still not feeling 100 percent for sure, and got to my seat and the 2 guys in it wanted to know if I would change with their buddy who was also in an aisle seat a few rows up. I picked my seat based on a webseat on choosing the best seats in the airplane and I was looking forward to relaxing - but I said Well, OK.  They thanked me and all did the Thai bow, (they were German) so I settled into my new seat next to this weird man and his wife. The whole trip he made asides about the meal, the other passengers and especially was mimicing very loudly the snoring of the man opposite me.  He was obviously (the snorer) t hinking he was at home in his bed and I said isn't it wonderful to be able to relax like that, and I'm glad I don't have to listen to that every night and the guy just kept loudly imitating him.  And the food, he complained about this wonderful Thai food (dinner and breakfast but I couldn't really eat dinner and could not eat breakfast, darn, free drinks etc.) and he complained to the wonderful Thai waitress that the breakfast 'was nothing'!  It was A CHOICE of omelet, sausage or ricotta cannelloni plus fres fruit plus croissants plus juice/coffee etc. !  And he ordered at least 8 'cold Heineken' during the night.  His wife slept the whole flight and i think it was so she didn't have to deal with him.  However, technical problems prevented any movies to be shown, which was a disappointment to me. I however, have been reading a good book called 'On Beauty' by Zadie Smith, she wrote 'White Teeth' and I had never heard of her  until  met 2  travellers reading it and was intrigued.  In Siracusa, Sicily there was a bookstore with some English titles, and I asked for White Teeth (don't we all want white teeth, haha) and she said she was aware of the book but they didn't have it but had 2 other titles by Smith so I bought On Beauty. It is a good read, and fortunately with the book, and the headset onthe plane I could drown out 47 I's ministrations.
Sorry this blog is more disjointed than usual! and that is saying a lot I realize.... I am using the internal mouse on this laptop a nd keep hitting the erase button by mistake and don't dare do a cut and paste to rearrange things for fear I would cut and never paste...  But I also wanted to backtrack a little on the train trip from Slovenia to Frankfurt. We went through AUstria, through almost Alps, it was beautiful but I was so under the weather I slept through most of it, but there was snow there but no where else.  In Slovenia they usually have 2 feet of snow now and 20 below instead of 10 above. And no snow in Frankfurt, it was raining and quite balmy. So now to finish this and  send before something happens to it!
