Hello from Ljubljana, Slovenia, a wonderful city with traffic lights (unlike much of Italy which has painted lines on the road for pedestrians but few lights and pedestrians don't appear to have right of way), wide streets and few people.  Very beautiful city with lots of Museums, Art Galleries etc, even a boat tour on the Ljublianica River at this time of year!  Tomorrow I plan to go on the combined walking tour of the city with a half hour boat tour. I had been limiting my Museum and city tours in Italy because the whole country is a Museum and because everything was so expensive but here quite a bit cheaper and they just started using the euro on Jan. 1 and are in the implementation phase so using both their SIT and the euro right now. The shop keepers seem well trained as no one is batting an eye about switching back and forth as some people are still using SIT.  I even found a deli already with vegetables so loaded up on salads. And my hostel is great, Hostel Simbol Castle, a 10 minute walk from train Station after I found a map, brand new, even the bed lights aren't up yet and my prayers were answered - instead of putting me in the mixed dorm with 2 guys, they gave me an empty 6 bed dorm, own kitchen and microwave and bathroom!  I am the only guest so far in that dorm, although i've been gone since 10:30 this a.m. and who knows who i may find when i get back. But I can do laundry for free and plan to do that when i get back later tonight.
I arrived safely on Slovenia railways, a cute 3 car train as the only link for Slovenia with Italy they subsidize it. It was full of people returning to other parts from Italy for New Years, my seat mates were a young under 25 Bulgarian couple (they are IT entrepreneurs) and a young disgruntled Italian guy who was dismayed that he couldnt find a job in Italy with a Bachelors and Masters degree - he has a contract with the University here in Ljub. as an assistant professor for the Italian language. He would like to stay in Italy but there aren't enough jobs.  Bulgaria is doing well according to the couple, and so is Slovenia, very modern, people well dressed etc. and the tourist info this a.m. was very busy.  better run now
