Entry 12 of 107 | show all | print this entry

I spent my last day in Latvia at the old mud spa/beach side resort of Jurmala, a 40 min 1 lat ($2) train ride from Riga. The train passed some very poor areas that one doesn't see in Riga. The town was pretty quiet, I had lunch there and walked the beautiful beach while the tide was coming in. Many local people seem to do that. Then I went back to Ria at 6 p.m. and picked up my back back from the train station and walked over to the Bus Station to catch my 8 p.m. 12 hour bus ride to Warsaw. By this time the cold I had picked up was getting worse and I spent a fitful night on the bus, of c ourse once again, nosiy people sitting right behind me. I don't know what makes people think we want to hear their converation and phone calls all over the bus, beats me. I ended up moving up a couple of seats. The Polish customs officer woke me during my only sleep. Anyway that is how I spent my month anniversary into my year travelling. Got into Warsaw at 7:30 a.m. and decided to try to catch the right local bus to my hostel but of course very few people could help me out as English is not common and when people speak it they don't seem very happy about it... It was raining, it was still dark, and the bus stops all around the bus station were packed with people trying to get to work. I had my big pack on and take up the spots of 2 people and decided, after buying 2 bus tickets, that I didn't have a hope of getting onto a bus already packed with people so I hailed a taxi and managed to make it known where I was going but promptly got fleeced apparently, costing way more than it should have for the trip. But I don't think i would have found it by bus as I would have had to change buses, something I wasn't aware of. I got here before the hostel guests were up so I was told to help myself to breakfast, which was only coffee and toast, which I did. Then the hoard came into the breakfast room, one of the showers isn't working so I went downstairs to have a shower, decided I'd better try to get some sleep as by now it is 9 30 a.m. and I haven't slept all night. The hostel is in an inner courtyard and I have a private room with a balcony overlooking the courtyeard but there is a school next door and as soon as I tried to sleep, 'the kids were playing musical games and it was lovely but not when I was trying to sleep. The song played on the piano was the same over and over again. Anway I decided I should try to get my train ticket for Prague, see some sights as I am only here 2 nights so am on my way out. Sorry if this is sounding a little dismal, bound to happen!! i am taking next week off from travelling, staying put in Karlovy Vary as of Oct. 29-Nov. 3 so that is why I am making haste. I will probably come back to spend more time in Prague and also I need to visit Krakow. I will try to get a city tour - about 85% of the city was destryoed during WWII.
