I felt sad to leave Frankfurt as I was getting to know my way around on the subway and there are lots of little neighourhoods to explore. But I planned to spend 4 days in Berlin before I left for Estonia so I arrived here on Tues. I took the fast ICE train and it was a pleasure, 4 hours. Have spent the last 3 days running around seeing the sights, Berlin wall, ,brandeburg Gate etc. and did most on a FREE 4.5 hour sightseeing tour, which included a free beer! also went to the Pergamon Museum last night as it was free then. Today i had a tour of the Philharmonic symphony building and have tickets to hear the Berlin Symphony tonight playing Tchaikowsky and the tickets were not expensive! am so excited. went to Potsdam yesterday before the museum - i buy a subway pass wherever i go and spend a lot of time on them when it is raining out, like it has been the past few days. the subways are clean and safe. I amstaying in the sunflower hostel in east berlin, which is fine but i arrived at night, tired and thought i knew where I was going, but didn't and there were no info kiosks around so found an internet cafe w ith phones and th ey told m e i needed to take a subway to get to the hostel... i hadn't planned on that, with my backpack and all so spent 5 euros on a taxi, not bad about $8 and worth it as i was hungry as well.. In east berlin there is lots of graffiti, the artistic kind, on buildings. seems like people have a need for a bold big (free) canvas! so amazing the amount of reconstruction that has taken place here, between the results of WWII and the wall coming down which is an incredible story -about it being a mistake (the timing)...
have met a couple of people to chat with but have been busy trying to get as much in as possible - better run to have something to eat and then get to the Philharmonic tonight. I leave for Tallinn, Estonia at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, walk to subway from hostel, subway to airport, after a long walk - did a dry run yesterday without the pack!
will report from there! thanks to all who have dropped me a line!
Linda
