For obvious reasons we visited Agra - a grubby and hectic city south of Delhi. Home to the world-famous and probably the most recognisable building in the world....The Taj Mahal! We'd already heard that Agra was pretty grim as far as India's large cities go but I guess if the terrific Taj is it's centrepiece, the rest probably doesn't even want to attempt to outshine it

We arrived all raggedy and forlorn after a very early train ride, checked into a cheap room, ate breakfast and off we trotted to the first attraction - Agra Fort. It was quite similar to the Red Fort in Delhi however we found it to be better preserved. At some viewpoints in the fort you could actually see the mighty TM in he distance through the haze...and pollution.

After strolling round the Mughal era fort it was time to see one of the wonders of the world - wooo! We hopped into a rickshaw who actually got lost and took several wrong turnings and eventually we arrived at the ticket area. 750 Rupees lighter (10 GBP), we jumped the queue (because we were foreigners) and entered the main gate. And there it was, in all it's majestic glory standing tall and wide. The bulbous towers of the Taj was fantastic to actually see in the flesh!

Although there were thousands of tourists there it didn't matter because you could still see the marvellous masterpiece un-obscured from wherever you stood. I'm a little concerned that Sean and I might be framed above an Indian families masterpiece after a father handed me his baby for a photo in front of the amazing architecture!

Once we felt that we'd got our moneys worth we headed out of the grounds to a rooftop cafe for a lassi (yoghurt drink) and a brilliant view of the Taj. So our day in Agra was filled with touristy goodness and we can now tick another important world landmark off our list!
