A proper country man took to the stage and recited bush poetry, sang hill-billy tunes and cracked a few jokes! We had a really fun night here and we were surprised at what a great place it was considering how remote it was!
Next stop from North to South was the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve. The area was covered with hundreds of boulders - some around ten feet tall
Moving on, we arrived at the heart of Australia - Alice Springs. There wasnt lots to do here - it's mainly a hub of good information about Central Australian attractions and a place to stock up on essentials. It was definitely the first place of real civilisation we'd passed through for a few days!
From here we headed to the McDonnell Ranges which encircle Alice Springs. The drive there was very scenic with gorgeous green hills rolling by the side of the road. We stayed at Ormiston Gorge, which was in the West McDonnells. That night we went to a ranger campfire talk and learnt about the local wildlife in the National Park - including the desert rat and currently a plague of mice...They weren't lying! When Sean nipped back to camp that night, he heard a suspicious rustling in a bag with bread in it that we'd stupidly left outside...Low and behold there were about five mice having the feast of their lives!
Early the next morning we did an hour and a half long walk through the actual gorge. First climbing up part of it and then making our way down to the Pound which was filled with clear water. We were glad we'd decided to do it early because we were the only people around and also the sun made the rock faces appear more striking. It was really good to be at one with nature again and from here it was time to see some more natural wonders of Australia!
