Where I stayed
Umaid Bawhan Hotel
Our rickshaw driver from the station to the hotel was trying his hardest to get us to on a tour with him around the city the next day. We usually just do everything at our own pace but when Ali produced a ‘tourists comments’ book we were convinced! Everyone said how great the tour was and how worthwhile it was to do it! This book made an impression on us so we gave in and asked him to pick us up the next morning. After all, it’s not everyday you read such positive things about a rickshaw driver, ha! We later found out when we got a lift with a different driver that actually you do see this kind of thing everyday in Jaipur – having a comments book is something of a trend here
Anyway, the tour still sounded like a good idea! The next morning our chariot was awaiting and off we sped round the capital of Rajasthan. Ali, was indeed a fantastic host and took us to all the sights including the city palace, marble tombs, viewpoints and into the walled city, which is where Jaipur gets it’s nickname from. Years ago, the Queen of Rajasthan wanted her city to be her favourite colour so the concrete work is a dull mauve type shade. Our chauffer (ha!) also drove us to a handicraft haveli which was filled with things from glorious bespoke furniture to pretty jewellery boxes. We also went to a textile outlet where I almost went bankrupt and bought lots of pretty items. We also got shown how some of the textiles were made and saw a man making a carpet that was going to take him six weeks to complete.
Our day ended at Amber Fort just as the sun was about to go down. To me, Amber Fort is the most impressive of the forts we have seen and because it was up a hill it had good views of the surrounding area. Our time in Jaipur was also filled with scrumptious food at the rooftop restaurant of the hotel, cocktails at fancier hotels and rickshaw driving – don’t ask!
We really liked Jaipur as a city because even though it had its fair share of craziness it had plenty to see and do and well, the shopping was a dream!!!
