Why oh why must Vanessa and I have country
arrival issues? You may already know about our first day of France blunder (if
not I’m not re-telling it), and I’m ashamed to say that another such blunder
occurred during our voyage to Italy. Firstly, we flew out of London-Gatwick
where the line-ups are RIDICULOUSLY long, and we almost missed our flight.
Luckily it was delayed so that we were able to get on it... unluckily it was
delayed so that we were put behind schedule in Milan. Once we arrived in Milan
we realized that the airport was nowhere near the train station, and as it
turned out it was over an hour to get to the station via a bus shuttle
arrived at the station just after our ‘back-up train’ was leaving... next
train? 2 hours. BAH! Our main worry at this point was that we were going to be
staying at a small hotel where you have to meet the owner at the front door to
be checked it and clearly we were going to be considerably late. Ah! We sorted
that crisis out courtesy of Vanessa’s cell phone and finally got on our train,
which was great until our train stopped suddenly, around 10PM, on the tracks in
the middle of nowhere. We looked out the window and there were workers walking
around the train on the tracks, using flashlights and looking concerned. There
were many, successive announcements, all of course in Italian, that sounded
serious (maybe just cuz they were in Italian???) Anyway, finally our train got
going again, after I had a near conniption fit, and we arrived at our hotel in
La Spezia where the nice lady had been waiting 30 minutes, and we checked into
our room, which was something out of an Ikea catalogue, and we were SO HAPPY!
Finally, we were in Italy!
