I felt a little home sick last night, the heat had made me feel unwell and I was staying in a pokey stuffy dorm room with no window. It helped to go out to dinner with some people from the last tour but it was a quiet night and I was in bed by 10pm ready for another early start. I felt heaps better the next day and my wave of home sickness had subsided. It helped that the people on my Kakadu tour were a lively friendly entertaining bunch. Even though there were a few people I got on with really well on the last tour, I feel the overall tour dynamics were a lot better on this tour! It helped that most people were close to my age - mostly people in their mid 20s on a career break. We did have an older couple Anne and John from Melbourne who were probably in their 60's however they were so young at heart and threw themselves into everything with the energy of a 20something backpacker - you should have seen Anne on the dance floor on the last night
Our first day started with another 2 hour drive before a walk into the cliffs to see the aboriginal cave art some of which dates back thousands of years! Then it was a stroll around the cultural museum before we cooled down in the pool at our campsite. The campsite was surprisingly posh and we even got an upgrade cabin with beds and air con! After a quick dip in the pool we went on a sunset boat cruise on the Adelaide river . The views were fantastic and we saw loads of birds and even a few salt water crocodiles! The views on the way back as the sun went down were spectacular! I'll post some photos so you can see for yourself!
I was slightly dreading today as it was our longest Kakadu walk of around 8km. Doesn't sound much and wouldn't usually faze me but the climate in the Northern Territory is enough to make sitting in the shade feel exhausting! But we all managed it fairly easily - we must be acclimatising! That and the swim in the middle made it much more bearable although we were sweating buckets by the time we got back! The walk itself was really lovely. There was a steep scramble up a cliff to see some amazing views
The last day of my Aussie outback adventure! This time we were off to Litchfield national park. It was a less strenuous day which involved hopping from one waterfall to another so lots of swimming! The water was the perfect temperature and it was a great way to wind up the trip. There were no salt water crocs in this area but there might have been freshwater crocs - apparently they are relatively harmless to humans. I knew they were less aggressive but I was still nervous at the prospect of swimming with them but we lived to tell the tale
I wanted to see sunset from darwins beaches which is meant to be incredible but we were all shattered when we got back to Darwin so I gave it a miss. My trip is so fast paced - I'm learning to slow down a little when I get the opportunity! That said a few hours later I met my tour group for dinner which turned into a lot of drinks and dancing! Really fun night! Only downside was an email came through on my phone about midnight telling me there was a problem with the luggage I tried to ship home. Apparently something prohibited was in it which they were sending back to byron for me to remove only I am not there to do so and they didn't even know what the item was! Very frustrating! Eventually got it sorted - apparently it was because the company had forgot to fill some paperwork for my laptop which is now getting sorted. It may take a while as the luggage is already in transit to byron but as long as the new tenants refuse to take the luggage as I've asked Peter to organise, then it should eventually get back to me! The extra time actually works in my favour as I want it to arrive as late as possible so not to clutter mum and dads house for too long before my return!
Had a quiet relaxing day today starting with a swim in the pool and then a picnic by the lagoon in Darwin with some of my new friends
More to come soon from my Asian adventure. Chapter 2...
