We spent our last night in Queenstown at a DOC campsite (just the basics i.e. a tap and a pit toilet) as we are trying to keep costs down by only getting a powered campsite every other day. We just picked one from the guidebook and hoped it would be ok but what we stumbled across was fantastic. Yes the site was basic but it was miles from anywhere down an unsealed road with only cows and lambs for company. It was set by a beautiful lake and I went on a long walk around the lake that evening with my camera for company. Wyn decided to run it - must have been a killer as it was a 10k round trip but was extremely hilly! It was really nice just to chill out that evening as we have done a lot of rushing around so far
The next day Wyn did his mountain bike ride which he absolutely loved. He got to try out the bike he is hoping to buy one day and I think it went down pretty well! I had planned to get out and do some photography but the weather was not on my side so I quickly explored a small market then headed to a coffee shop then onto the cinema to see hotel transylvania. As an animated film, I was the only adult in the audience but it was actually pretty funny and ended with perfect timing to meet Wyn. After a quick tock up on food supplies and petrol we hit the road again. This time headed for Mt Cook
The drive up to Mt Cook was stunning. The lake is an aqua blue colour - so bright! Apparently the reason for it is that the glacial water comes down the valleys at such force, it wears away the rock which forms a sediment at the top of the water which reflects the blue colour. It was stunning! We stayed at a campsite by the lake that night and the following morning after waking early for a beautiful sunrise over the mountains, we headed for the Tasman valley alongside Mt Cook where we went on some gorgeous walks. Then whilst it was Wyns turn to chill out with a book, I went on a horse trek into the mountains. As the only person who booked that day, it was a 1-on-1 lesson and we got to do a bit of cantering. Although my horse started to take off after a while and I almost fell off!! After a lovely day in the Mt cook region we headed for Lake Tekapo and set up camp for the night.
Lake Tekapo is just as beautiful. Again bright aqua lakes! Another good reason to get up for sunrise so it was an early start again. We are now off to hire some bikes to cycle around the lake and then we are headed for Hamner Springs and the famous spa resort there. I'll update again soon! Theres a few pics on Facebook from my iPhone but no chance to edit the proper pics yet!
