It's been a while so here's the latest update!

After getting back from my trip to the UK in May, I went back to work in ICU another term. I've learnt a lot but I feel it's time to go back to ED now - I'm looking forward to working normal hours again! ICU hours are intense! (just 1 week to go!) The last week especially intense after 4 cardiac arrest calls and some very sad emotional cases. I had an awful case this week where we lost a young woman unexpectantly of unknown cause. She had 3 children including a baby and so it was all incredibly sad. I learnt a lot about brainstem testing and organ donation but it put a strain on all involved. Thankfully cases like that are rare.

It's not been all work lately, fortunately! A month ago we had our winter hospital ball. My friends were involved with organising it and did an amazing job, it was very fun! I did however embarrass myself slightly when busting some moves on the dance floor with Wyn, I slipped and fell on glass! The wound on my knee probably needed suturing but I did not want to be 'that doctor' who ends up back in work after a work night out! However, turns out I would not be the first as another colleague got locked out of her house and had to bunk down for the night in the fast track unit!

2 weeks later it was Splendour time! A much anticipated music festival held in Byron Bay. Australia's version of Glastonbury. It was inevitably muddy, hectic and very very fun! We didn't see as many bands as I had hoped as trying to coordinate 15 drunk people can be a bit of a challenge! However the bands I did see were brilliant especially The Kooks and The Gossip. Everyday involved champagne breakfast parties, crazy outfits and lots of brilliant music. The weather was brilliant especially considering it is mid winter. We had 1 rainstorm just before we arrived on the 1st day ensuring there was calf deep mud dance floors - which I think added to the fun a little! Especially when AJ one of the occupational therapists from work fell over in it! She took great pleasure in trying to get everyone else as muddy as possible! Unfortunately Wyn decided not to go to Splendour as he didn't know many of the australian bands and as his work is casual, he got a lot of work during the Splendour weekend as town was so busy

The last few weeks have been busy with visitors. Wyn's Mum, Susan and his younger brother Joe arrived last week. Unfortunately I have not seen much of them yet due to the hours I work but they seem to be enjoying themselves, even braving the freezing cold mid winter swimming pool and ocean! Although I'm not sure how brave they will be to go swimming again after seeing a shark from the beach a few days ago! We did manage to go out for dinner the other evening which was nice. They are now in Sydney for a few days arriving back this evening. I have a week off so hopefully we will have a few day trips.

Whilst they have been away, my friend Neil from the Uk and his girlfriend Cerian, came to visit. I had not met Cerian previously as they got together after we left for Australia but she is absolutely lovely and we had a lot of fun yesterday. They arrived in the morning so we went for a late breakfast and then walked to Byron lighthouse that afternoon. It's such a beautiful walk - it never gets boring no matter how many times I go. Having been in Yamba the past few days on 'Shanes 10 buck tour' where they met a plastic snake and saw a man whisked off to hospital after a badly timed cliff jump, the pressure was on to give them an enjoyable tour of Byron instead! Fortunately the weather was on our side and we were lucky enough to see lots of dolphins and whales. Howvere Neil and Cerian seem to be a target for drama and shortly after spotting a huge pod of dolphins we saw 2 men stuck out at sea drifting nearer to the cliffs. Fortunately they had already been spotted and the coastguard had been called and not long after when a crowd had gathered to see the men got to safety, a jet ski picked them up. They were extremely lucky that they did not get carried towards the cliffs in the rough sea around that part of the cliffs. That evening, drama over, we decided to stay in and cook and have some wine which was a very fun evening, especially when Pete, my housemate, TRIED to teach us to play the digeridoo...! Neil is a chef and so dinner was delicious! A 3 course dinner of garlic and lemon king prawns, chilli marinated steak with dauphinoise potatoes and roasted veg followed by a chocolate fondant. YUM! Sadly they had to leave this morning as they are short on time because they had a wedding to go to in the Whitsundays soon. However even their departure was not without drama! As we pulled up at the bus station, out pulled their bus... We decided to follow it to its next stop but it carried on not stopping so eventually we ended up at Murwulimbah about 60km away from Byron following this bus with my petrol dial pointing to zero, afraid to stop for petrol and lose the bus! We eventually caught up with the bus and I went to get petrol afterwards only to realise I had no cash on me (after all I had left thinking I was driving 5 minutes to drop them off!) So it was a bit of a dicey trip home especially as there was absolutely no signal on my phone! Fortunately when I got to the highway, I managed to get through to a friend who had also incidentally broken down! She paid for my petrol over the phone so I could get back to Byron without making that 2 breakdowns in 1 day - mine and hers! I definately owe her a few drinks tonight! I believe her car is up and running again now too!

Anyway that is all for now. I will post some photos soon. Hope all is well back home! x
