. Essentially, I always feel a little more casual than the rest of the crew. Perhaps due to the laid back mountain style I was brought up with, I am not used the lavish pampering it takes to go on a simple grocery errand or leave the house, period. I am also not used to the excruciating slow pace at which my female family members walk. By myself I can make it to the church in 4 minutes, however, with my Colombian family it literally takes 15 minutes. Some times we are moving so slow, we actually move backwards. There are breaks to observe cute Christmas decorations and hold ups when Isabella has to be convinced that it is necessary to hold Marly's hand before crossing the street. We finally made and by some miracle were still thirty minutes early.
The others showed up slowly and "el padre" came out greet us all. Each time there was a new arrival, a circle of check-kissing took place. At four thirty the service began. Mami read a expert from the bible, the father gave a nice blessing, we repeated the sermon, prayed on our knees, ate the blessed crackers, and sang a few songs. It was an interactive hour. Grandmas was so happy and her positive energy had everyone in a good mood.
All of the attendants were invited by Mami and Papi to the bakery across the street to enjoy "tinto" and "pancitos". The majority of Christmas time indulgences are fried and sweet, making December the most fattening month, but still there seems to be no worry about the calorie intake. The women blabber about everything from nail polish to the college days. I am glad to report I can keep up with all the topic changes and keep focused on the two hour conversations. At times I wonder if they will run out of things to say since they have been at it, nonstop for hours, yet that is never the case. If anything they need more time to discuss details of each story. Nothing gets left out.
When all the women were still gossiping as we arrived at the house, Tati and I agreed that we needed a break from their chatting. The two of us watched "novelas" (soap operas) instead and concluded the night with our own sisterly chatting.
Wonderful day :)
Due to Grandma's cancer, Adrianna has planned a service especially for her wellness and recovery. It was a small gathering of friends and family, but a very nice gathering that had Grandma glowing. Mami called her Mami at 1:30 p.m. to make sure that she was still planning on attending and that her and Nando would be there in time. About an hour after she started getting herself prepared. I was under the impression that your "sunday best" would be the expected atire, however that was not the case. Tati sported a hoodie and leggings, Marly a t-shirt and jeans, Papi showed up after work in his casual day gear, and the neighbors were in there basic Colombian wear. I have found that it is best to over dress because I really never know what I'm getting myself into, and "basic Colombian wear" can actually be quite extravagant. There are tight tops and slim fitting jeans that are embellished with rhinestones and glitter. It is unthought of to leave the house without bright lipstick or drawn on eyebrows
