In Harstad, we visited the Trondenes church (built in the 13th century) - the church was amazing to see and to be inside. We met the organist, who was there as an informational guide, and he let Dan play the organ (the organ itself was from the 20th century, but it was sitting on an 18th-century balustrade in a 13th-century church - pretty cool).
From Lødingen, we travelled south into the Lofoten Islands where we visited Svolvær. There, we hiked up about 1000 feet to catch a glimpse of the surrounding countryside (see pictures). This part of Norway is vast and beautiful, as you can see.
Later, we were able to drive near the site of the Melsby farmstead (where Lea's Grandmother's relatives are from). We weren't able to get to the actual farmstead - both because we weren't sure exactly where it was and because the general area is a restricted military facility - but we got close enough to feel that we'd touched upon that part of the family history.
Soon, we're leaving for Oslo where we'll head home (via London and Dalles). It's been a fantastic trip, and needless to say, we're both sad to leave - but it will also be good to get home and see everyone again (including of course Riley and Nacho...).
Hope all is well - we miss you all!
